Prometheans!

I return with fire. Thanks for letting me have a week off. I feel like I’ve made the most of it. Although, you can be the judge of that.

Before I get into the £10BURN stuff there’s a few things to say.

First. A hearty welcome to our new congregants (aka free subscribers). No idea why we’ve had a little uptick this week - perhaps not posting is the key? But we are blessed to have you with us. Xx

Second a huge Thank You to

Parsifal Solomon
for the wonderful Moonwalk on Saturday night (26/04/25). It’s taken a couple of days for my aged body to recover but it was so worth it. Such a magical thing to slow-walk, criss-crossing the mighty Thames under a dark moon with the tap, tap, tap of Parsifal’s Staff on the pavement. We burned money at The Monument, too. Do go if/when Parsifal does another one! We took in the sunrise on Tower Bridge. After a coin toss into the river to mark the end of the pilgrimage (another coin from my childhood collection - the Thames has had a few of them now!) a seal popped up to say “Hello”!

Well, I say a seal. It might have been a Mermaid! All Hail, Melusine!

Third in conjunction with Pluto Press my friend the mighty

Max Haiven
has a Crowdfund running for his Billionaires and Guillotines game. Players take on the role of 2-5 rival plutocrats vying to grab the wealth of the world before their actions trigger a revolution. Max is a brilliant academic; his Art After Money and Revenge Capitalism are superbly insightful works. But unlike many of his academic brethren he gets his hands dirty too. We must support and encourage this sort of behaviour from our best and brightest! So please do support the crowdfund if you can. Only a couple of days left for him to get across the line.

£10KBURN

Okay. Let’s dive into the meat of this.

To make it easier to keep track of our work on £10KBURN, I’ve created an £10KBURN INDEX DOCUMENT - Information on the design, planning and execution of the £10KBURN for 23/08/25.

I’ll update it every time I create a new document or post related to £10KBURN. Comments on it are open to everyone. So when Substack does its restricted comments trick on paywall posts, free subscribers can just pop over there and comment as they wish.

Okay. Here come the juice…

The document I’ve been working on these past two weeks is this one:

£10K BURN SITE & MULTI-STEP FORM OUTLINE: User Interface: structure and visual design.

Please do take a look at it if you can.

BUT READ THIS BIT FIRST! - It’s rough and it’s very incomplete. And there’s stuff I know looks bad. Creating it has been like fighting a bad tempered bear. I’ve had to balance what can be achieved technically (using the Shopify platform) with the user experience we want to offer and how that looks. Thinking in detail about all that has led me to change a few things from the original proposal. You’re seeing version three. I’ve been down a lot of dead ends to get there. Be gentle with me, please. But honest too! Okay, go ahead. Take a look.

Things I still need to do the visual design and text for:
Email Flow + Pledge Edit page + FAQ

These are the elements I’ve changed since the original document.

  1. I’ve made it so users can pledge only to BURN or only to GIVE. So obviously now the value of the BURN pledge and the value of the GIVE pledge don’t have to be equal.

  2. Users will be able to edit their pledges until a cut-off time (yet to be decided)

  3. I’ve allowed users to allocate their GIVE funds according to their preferences. So if there’s a charity they don’t like, they don’t have to support it.

I’ll continue to work on and update this Version (03). Once I’ve handed the visuals over to my graphics wizard friend and he makes them look a million times better, I’ll start a Version (04) and let you know.

I’d LOVE to discuss what you think of the Charities? I’m pretty set that there should be four of them. I’m not absolutely set that it must be the four shown.

Tom has already suggested that we needed an environmental charity - hence the inclusion of Greenpeace. I thought Greenpeace would be appropriate because they’ve got that mad case going on where they’ve been ordered to pay $660 million dollars in damages. Essentially the plaintiff Energy Transfer is trying to silence them by destroying them financially.

I went for Shelter rather than St Mungos just because I thought they are more instantly recognised as a homeless charity. Oxfam have been in some terrible trouble in recent years. And Dog’s Trust use a lot of very hard hitting ‘starving dog’ imagery to try to encourage donations. So a mixed bag of reasons and no clear strategy on my part. But something about each one just resonated for me.

If you have other suggestions then please do let me know.

Thanks for your interest. There’s a million other things going on too with the £10KBURN. There’ll be many more updates before £10K get burned.

If you have talents you think you could lend to CoB for this please PLEASE do let me know. You’ll be working with some truly amazing people. Hopefully, I’ve put enough ingredients on the table now for you to imagine what might be cooked up.

I do have a paragraph or three that needs to go behind the paywall. So I’ll bid our non-pecuniary congregants farewell for now (Remember, I’m an easy touch for freebies so just lemme know).
Burn. Shine. Love.
Jon Xx
