'breaking the spell' is how David Graeber put it. Although I like to think that there is deeper magic we can access once the wizard's curtain is drawn back.
It sounds like you're very tough on yourself, Jon. I think it's good that you're taking more time to ponder the ideas percolating in your mind. Every day, every hour, you can only do what you can do.
As I think you know, one of the things I've been banging on about over recent years is to prioritise time with our loved ones and it sounds like the pressure you've been putting on yourself has been getting in the way of that. Certainly time for the recalibration you mentioned...
...especially when one gets one's head around the *actual* predicament we're in with regard to climate and the metacrisis at large.
The '2ºC by 2035' is ultimately a distraction and an illustration of how climate scientists and the climate movement are *still* getting the messaging wrong.
2ºC (and much more) has been baked in for decades, so it's not a prediction — it's a fact that's unfolding. Today, we're experiencing the consequences of human behaviour up until around the late 1960s. Any talk of 'solutions' is a fallacy.
I recommend reading the seminal 'Overshoot' by William Catton...written in 1980!
Anyway, keep on keepin' on. I, for one, am not expecting anything of you. I'm just glad you're in the world, doing what you're doing.
Thanks Jack. I'm glad you're in the world doing what you're doing too!
I think what happens to me re climate is that I have gone through periods of... well, profound grief I guess... a sort of numbed feeling of shock and despair... for my kid's futures fear, for all our kid's futures.
The feeling can't last because its too debilitating. So I get back in to the groove of daily life. Things like the '2ºC by 2035' just sort of remind me of that grief.
I know I'm not alone in feeling it (grief is not *quite* the right word but its close).
Added to all that is a sort of rationalisation about the socio-political stuff. Things must/will change - may be for better, may be for worse. But the sorts of lives we've lived in the UK on the cusp of C20th/C21st are coming to an end.
I think that's partly why I look for scale in the things I do (other part is ego, of course). I want what I do to contain at least a possibility of nudging the world toward a better outcome.
I've said before that persuading everyone to burn money is an impossible task. But that's not a good enough reason not to try.
Thanks for your writing Jon, wise as always. It is inspiring to read how you don't just try to push through with things that might break your back. Let things Take their time. Take care of your self, the flock needs it's shepherd. I suspect that many of us could not publicly burn money without the safety of hiding in your shadow
For me burning money is about doing a magick to divest myself of the bullshit of industrial civilisation. It's a step towards breaking the spell.
I invite everyone to be a lazy slob and not push for this or that. We stand naked in the forest and everything else is a construct.

After breaking the spell, take a shit on the wizard for starters 😁
Beautifully put. 🎯👏
I agree 😂

Aw, thanks Magnus. It's very kind of you to say so and lifts my spirits. Xx
